Crowns and bridges

A crown, often called a cap, covers and restores a damaged tooth. A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth, bridging the gap.

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown, often referred to as a “cap,” is a custom-made restoration that covers the entirety of a tooth. It’s designed to restore the tooth’s shape, size, strength, and appearance.

A dental bridge is a custom-made dental appliance used to replace one or more missing teeth, effectively bridging the gap created by tooth loss.

Who is it for?

  • A tooth that already has a large filling and the remaining tooth tissue may be weakened
  • A discoloured tooth you would like to improve
  • A root filled tooth that needs protecting from future fracture
  • One or more missing teeth, with healthy teeth on either side for support

What to expect

  1. 01

    Preparation

During the first appointment the tooth is prepared for the crown under local anaesthetic so you should feel no pain.

  2. 02

    Temporary crown

An impression is taken and a temporary crown is placed on the tooth for approximately two weeks whilst the crown is made by the dental lab.

  3. 03

    Fitting

Once the crown has been made it can then be fitted. In most cases it will settle after a few days so that it feels just like a normal tooth.

  4. 04

    Adjustment

Occasionally, the crown may need to be adjusted if it feels higher than the surrounding teeth.

How long do dental crowns last?

Generally, dental crowns can last anywhere from 5 to 15 years, but some can last even longer with proper care and maintenance. Brush twice a day, floss at least once a day and avoid biting down on hard objects like ice.

Common questions

Crowns can be made from various materials, including porcelain fused to metal, all-ceramic, or all-metal (such as gold or another alloy), depending on the patient’s needs and aesthetic preferences.
